Why is KNX an Australian Technical Specification?
Table of Contents
In November 2017, Standards Australia formally adopted ISO/IEC 14543-3 (Parts 1-6) as an Australian Technical Specification. This significant milestone, driven by the advocacy efforts of the KNX Australia Group, aligns Australia with global standards for network-based control in home and building automation.
In 2003, KNX was established as the European Standard (EN 50090 series) and became an International Standard in 2006 (ISO/IEC 14543-3-1 to 7). Since then, the International Association has worked with national standardisation bodies to regionalise the international standard. Notably, KNX partnered with the P.R. of China to translate its specifications into Chinese, resulting in its adoption as the GB/T 20965 standard. By the end of 2017, Standards Australia adopted the relevant parts of ISO/IEC 14543-3 as a national technical specification, further solidifying KNX’s global appeal.
True Open Protocol
With ISO/IEC 14543-3 (Parts 1-6) now recognised by Standards Australia, building owners, managers, developers, and consultants can confidently adopt a truly open protocol. An open protocol offers unparalleled versatility and future-proofing, whether for retrofits or new builds. Unlike proprietary systems, which can be restrictive and limit smart building capabilities, an open protocol such as KNX provides endless possibilities for adaptation and extension to meet evolving needs.
More Choice and Flexibility
KNX is a globally respected standard, supported by over 500 manufacturers and more than 8,000 certified devices. This provides users with the freedom to base decisions on technical merits, rather than being locked into proprietary systems that may limit technology options or risk losing future support.
Guaranteed Assurance
The influx of new technologies and products in the market can pose challenges, as many do not conform to international or Australian standards. KNX ensures rigorous independent testing and verification of all products to confirm compliance with relevant standards. Only then can products carry the KNX logo, offering users peace of mind and guaranteed quality.
