KNX - The open standard,
Elevating Australia's

In 2012, we bet on an open-protocol standard most of the market hadn't heard of yet. Today it's the platform behind our biggest, most-awarded projects - from a civic building on the Surf Coast of Victoria to the biggest infrastructure projects in Sydney.

KNX wasn't the system we started on. C-Bus has that honour. But eleven years in, we bet on an open-protocol standard most of the Australian market hadn't heard of yet - and it's gone on to become the platform behind our biggest, most-recognised work.

What follows is the KNX story specifically: the projects, the awards, and the people who've carried it from a founding membership in 2012 to the system we deliver more than any other today.

The KNX story

We bet on an open-protocol standard that would go on to reshape the industry - years before most of the market caught on.
New platform, new opportunities
2012
Surf Coast Shire Civic Building
Torquay, Victoria - home of Bell's Beach. A single KNX system converges lighting, energy and water monitoring, hydraulics and building performance into one platform: Hager KNX wall switches, KNX 360° occupancy sensors, ABB KNX colour touchscreens and KNX-DALI gateways, all managed through NETxLAB Voyager software with a full interface to building security. A vertical wind turbine and 2.5kW photovoltaic system feed real-time data straight into the KNX network, displayed on a 42" interactive panel in the foyer designed to shift how occupants think about energy use. Developer: Surf Coast Shire Council. Architect: Perrott Lyon Mathieson. Builder: Cockram Constructions.

2013
The largest KNX project in Australia
161 Castlereagh St (ANZ Tower), officially opened September 2013 - 59,000m² over 44 levels, 6-Star Green Star. Developed by Grocon, designed by Francis-Jones Morehan Thorp, home to ANZ Bank, Herbert Smith Freehills and Boston Consulting Group. mySmart delivered all four major components: the base building plus each of the three tenancy fit-outs - over 1,800 KNX devices in total. KNX/DALI gateways from ABB stream the lighting ballasts; an ABB touchscreen sits near the lift core on every level, with Hager KNX wall switches throughout each floor. The system interfaces to the BMS via KNX/BACnet for full scheduling, and more than 30 AMX KNX interfaces control lighting scenes, curtains and blinds across the building's meeting spaces. Daylight harvesting and presence detection keep energy use to a minimum without compromising security for after-hours occupants.
